Truth Revealed.

Preface
--
SAD-VIDYA
सद्-विद्या
--
In my very first visit to श्री रमणाश्रम / Sri Ramanashram in  1984,
I came across this title, and at once noticed how great and important role this short treatise has to play in the life of a seeker.
During the next years I was much fascinated and absorbed in trying to understand the teachings of
Sri Ramana
through His other works like :
Talks, Upadesha-sara, Sad-darshanam, Sri Ramana Gita, Words of Grace,
Crumbs from His Table:
by Ramanananda Swarnagiri (K. S.Narayanaswami Aiyer):
Reminiscences of a devotee who visited
Sri Bhagavan several times during the years 1934 to 1936, and
who noted down instructive conversations and illustrative stories
told by Sri Bhagavanand many more.
--
I don't know Tamil as much so as to read and understand His original works.
But at the same time, I had access to Sanskrit and satisfactory knowledge of English also, which helped me greatly in understanding these books.
The above referred book is though named:
SAD-VIDYA /सद्-विद्या
is the same text Ulladu-Narpadu
(Forty verses on Reality)
that was again translated into Sanskrit by Sri Ramana Himself and given the title :
सद्दर्शनं / Sad-Darshanam.
This little text
SAD-VIDYA / सद्-विद्या
was later on translated into Sanskrit by K.Lakshman Sarma.
K.Lakshman Sarma. translated and wrote the whole text of SAD-VIDYA / सद्-विद्या  into Sanskrit, giving it the title :
REVELATION.
Yesterday I was glancing through this and felt the book was presented in the fashion of and on the lines of
अद्वैत बोध दीपिका / advaita-bodh-dipika.
another famous text on Vedanta.

Presenting here;
The Preface of
SAD-VIDYA / सद्-विद्या
written by Grant Duff
--
We of the western world have mostly come to regard the mind, mental activity, as the highest possible experience of Reality. True, a few mystics here and there have uttered vague hints as to modes of existence surpassing the functioning of the mind, but even a Boehme, a Swedenborg, speadily loses himself in a symbolism which leaves the reader nonplussed. Western mystics fly away from us into the empyrean : but the Eastern stands by us to the end, expanding in minute detail the supremely difficult theme of how to acquire liberation from the shackles of flesh. The East has wisdom and is willing to teach if we will hearken.
One of the chief reasons why the whole quest is so difficult from the Western viewpoint is just this : The mind must be used both to illuminate the path and to destroy itself, once this purpose is effected.
To say with the Maharshi in the treatise that "knowledge of diverse objects is ignorance" is to go in the opposite direction to all the teachings we have had from childhood. It is an immense statement and asks elaborate proof if it is to convince. But the mind, here as elsewhere, is our only instrument available for achieving this proof and the first point to realize is that the mind is quite ready and willing to do so, if we will allow it. The mind is like a mirror, ready to reflect whatever is put before it with perfect indifference as to its truth or falsity.
In the twentieth verse of this treatise many readers will be reminded of an utterance of Jesus in the New Testament, though Jesus is neither so explicit nor so scientific as the Maharshi, perhaps because he was addressing an audience that would not have comprehended the basic truth that God is no other than the Self*. Therefore Jesus uses his own name instead of the Self and so satisfies those simple minds with an external object for their worship. But as the Maharshi says here : "The empirical ego falls a prey to the Infinite."
Verse twenty-three contains a profoundly significant statement: "It is not the body which proclaims itself as 'I'." Every baby knows that it is not I when it first comes aware and talks of "baby wants this, baby wants that." Then its elders, far less wise than baby, come and tell baby that baby's body is baby's self, and, hearing nothing but this on all sides, baby becomes more and more convinced of this falsehood, until having attained what are called years of discretion" the baby now a grown man is ready to trounce and denounce anyone who is so bold as to affirm that the body is not the Self, from the belly-band inwards!
Why is this ? Because, as explained in verse twenty-four and following verses, there arises what the Indians call the jiva and we, for want of a single word, the individual soul. It has no reality but is potent as an illusion ensnaring all who have not been enlightened this illusion is apt to persist in some of its many forms varying in mode with each person.
The Maharshi tells us in verse twenty-eight and following verses what to do in order to divest ourselves of the illusion of the individual soul. The reader should especially note, in verse thirty-two, the advice given to aspirants to cease thinking "That I am" (सोऽहं) without at once realising the Self and inhering therein.
The doctrine of Karma is accepted in this treatise for those who remain bound in the trammels of the body, a bondage which endures so long as a man considers himself bound.
Finally, in verse forty, the whole fabric of form and formlessness is hurled to the ground and utterly destroyed with the statement that such thoughts are due to the empirical ego or 'individual soul'. Once we have divested ourselves of this false notion, that is the end of our troubles: Salvation has been found. "Therefore, realize yourself."
Such is the Message of the Maharshi and such is Reality, and such are we all, as soon as we know. But the word 'knowledge' is deceptive as used among us in the West and often denotes mere lip-service without any realization, or at best imperfect realization. Once the path is found it must be followed to the end-which is also the middle and the beginning.

My Bhagavan,

My Bhagavan,
(Composed by and Courtesy : Grace Ana K.)
--
This is for You.
This is for You.

As the sun rises and
peers through the trees.
I feel You smiling so dear
and fresh upon me.
As the birds sing in
melodious tunes
I feel Your happiness
freely beyond
any promised boons.
Your nature speaks
in every bow bending
of a branch
when the wind
captures my mind
in awe of your trance.

In this stillness
I reflect upon You,
My Bhagavan,
how beautiful and true
deeply beyond thought,
Your words carry to Heart
'where can I go?'
'where can I go?'
That echo of which
Your greatness beholds
While I recall that tale
of an off-distant star,
a comet who sang
leaving an invisible scar
through the mourning caves
And empty skies
the moment your
body disappeared
from our ocean-filled eyes.

Salt tasted tear trickles
down the mounds of my face
with a vision of Arunachalas'
Majesty, I can't soon erase.
I love You as though we've met
in Her distant land,
perhaps I was a flower
You saved from plucking
or between Your precious toes,
the holy red sand.

My Father, my Mother,
My anchor on a lost
wayward boat.
I think of You
as the tears
and ball of tension
rise in my throat.
How dear You are
to come to me
and answer my
desperate plea
for your love through
a body to clearly
set me free.
Oh how playful your ways
I have to admit,
you are tricky as I'm caught
in the web of my own
prayers alight
with your heart so near,
nearer than near
with sweet moments
of Narayana
making moments of
everything clear.

And you patiently let
the web untangle itself
as I dance in and out
in emotional wealth
And captivity,
While falling into the
humble hands
of a beautiful rock
Of ancient sacred land
and levity,
Beyond name and form
you weave through my life,
till there's no me or you
in caught up
moments of strife.
You let me sit
in the palm of your hand,
or a gem in the crown
of your majestic
starry band.

My beloved dear
beyond any role,
your compassion has
worn down the 'little me'
who has taken its toll,
and spent eons and eons
spinning its web
of bygone stories
both alive and dead.
But now is the time
in your infinite grace
your compassion opens
up to a peace-filled space
where I can rest and
wake into the real,
well rested and shed
my old skin of the weary
and tested tale.
My Beloved your promise
is locked deep in my Heart
for this blissful day
Your key will open and part
the Seas for a newborn start.
A journey of peace
this weary gypsy
traveler can rest
and know without a doubt
I am Home at best.

My Bhagavan,
This is for You.
This is for You.

Talks -25.

Talks -25
___________

Talk 25.
--
On a former occasion B. V. Narasimha Swami, author of Self-
Realization, asked: Who am I? How is it to be found?
M.: Ask yourself the question. The body अन्नमय कोश / annamaya kosa and its
functions are not ‘I’.
Going deeper, the mind मनोमय कोश / manomaya kosa and its functions are not
‘I’.
The next step takes on to the question. “Where-from do these
thoughts arise?” The thoughts are spontaneous, superficial or
analytical. They operate in intellect. Then, who is aware of them?
The existence of thoughts, their clear conceptions and their
operations become evident to the individual. The analysis leads to
the conclusion that the individuality of the person is operative as
the perceiver of the existence of thoughts and of their sequence.
This individuality is the ego, or as people say ‘I’.
विज्ञानमय Vijnanamaya kosa (intellect) is only the sheath of ‘I’, and not the ‘I’ itself.
Enquiring further the questions arise, “Who is this ‘I’? Where-from
does it come?” ‘I’ was not aware in sleep. Simultaneously with its rise
sleep changes to dream or wakefulness. But I am not concerned with
dream just now. Who am I now, in the wakeful state? If I originated
from sleep, then the ‘I’ was covered up with ignorance. Such an
ignorant ‘I’ cannot be what the scriptures say or the wise ones affirm.
‘I’ am beyond even ‘Sleep’; ‘I’ must be now and here and what I
was all along in sleep and dreams also, without the qualities of such
states. ‘I’ must therefore be the unqualified substratum underlying
these three states आनन्दमय / anandamaya kosa transcended.
‘I’ is, in brief, beyond the five sheaths. Next, the residuum left over
after discarding all that is not-self is the Self, Sat-Chit-Ananda.
D.: How is that Self to be known or realised?
M.: Transcend the present plane of relativity. A separate being आत्म / Self
appears to know something apart from itself  अनात्म / non-Self. That is, the
subject is aware of the object. The seer is drik; the seen is drisya.
There must be a unity underlying these two, which arises as ‘ego’.
This ego is of the nature of chit (intelligence); अचित् / achit (insentient
object) is only negation of chit. Therefore the underlying essence
is akin to the subject and not the object. Seeking the drik, until all
दृश्य / drisya disappears, the दृक् / drik will become subtler and subtler until the
absolute दृक् / drik alone survives. This process is called दृश्य-विलय / drisya vilaya
(the disappearance of the objective world).
D.: Why should the objects दृश्य / drisya be eliminated? Cannot the Truth
be realised even keeping the object as it is?
M.: No. Elimination of दृश्य /drisya means elimination of separate identities
of the subject and object. The object is असत् / unreal. All दृश्य / drisya (including
ego - अहंकार) is the विषय / object. Eliminating the unreal, the Reality survives.
When a rope is mistaken for a snake, it is enough to remove the
erroneous perception of the snake for the truth to be revealed.
Without such elimination the truth will not dawn.
D.: When and how is the disappearance of the objective world ( दृश्य -विलय / drisya
vilaya) to be effected?
M.: It is complete when the relative subject, namely the mind, is
eliminated. The mind is the creator of the subject and the object
and is the cause of the द्वैतपरक / dualistic idea. Therefore, it is the cause of
the wrong notion of limited self and the misery consequent on
such erroneous idea.
D.: What is this mind?
M.: Mind is one form of manifestation of life. A block of wood or a
subtle machine is not called mind. The vital force (प्राण)  manifests as life-activity
and also as the चेतन / conscious phenomena known as the mind.
D.: What is the relation between मन / mind and विषय / object? Is the mind
contacting something different from it, viz., the world?
M.: The world is ‘sensed’ in the waking and the dream states or is the
object of perception and thought, both being mental activities. If
there were no such activities as waking and dreaming thought, there
would be no ‘perception’ or inference of a ‘world’. In sleep there is
no such activity and ‘objects and world’ do not exist for us in sleep.
Hence ‘reality of the world’ may be created by the ego by its act
of emergence from sleep; and that reality may be swallowed up or
disappear by the soul resuming its nature in sleep. The emergence
and disappearance of the world are like the spider producing a
gossamer web and then withdrawing it. The spider here underlies
all the three states - waking, dreaming, and sleep; such a spider in
the person is called Atman (Self), whereas the same with reference
to the world (which is considered to issue from the sun) is called
Brahman (Supreme Spirit). He that is in man is the same as He that
is in the sun.
(Sa yaschayam purushe yaschasavaditye sa ekah /
स यश्चायं पुरुषे यश्च असौ आदित्ये  स एकः).
While Self or Spirit is unmanifest and inactive, there are no relative
doubles; e.g., subject and object - drik and drisya. If the enquiry
into the ultimate cause of manifestation of mind itself is pushed on,
mind will be found to be only the manifestation of the Real which is
otherwise called Atman or Brahman. The mind is termed सूक्ष्म / sukshma
sarira or ‘subtle-body’; and jiva is the individual soul. The जीव / jiva is
the essence of the growth of individuality; personality is referred
to as jiva. Thought or mind is said to be its phase, or one of the
ways in which the jiva manifests itself - the earlier stage or phase
of such manifestation being vegetative life. This mind is always
seen as being related to, or acting on, some non-mind or matter,
and never by itself. Therefore mind and matter co-exist.

Truth-Revealed / सद्-विद्या / सद्दर्शनं / உள்ளது நாற்பது

Truth-Revealed / सद्-विद्या / सद्दर्शनं / உள்ளது நாற்பது
--
Excerpts from Talks with Sri Raman Maharshi :
332,
...
...
Why is Isvara ईश्वर mentioned then?
Because you see the world and want to know how it came into being. They say that it was created by God. If you know that He created you and all else, your mind is a little satisfied and becomes less restless than otherwise. But it is not realisation. It can be only if you realise yourself; this is perfection or Realisation, etc. To resume polemics - the author of Vritti Prabhakara claims to have
studied 350,000 books before writing this book. What is the use? Can they bring in Realisation of the Self? Vichara Sagara is full of logic and technical terms. Can these ponderous volumes serve any real purpose? However, some people read them and then seek sages only to see if they can meet their questions. To read them, to discover new doubts and to solve them, is a source of pleasure to them. Knowing it to be sheer waste, the sages do not encourage such people. Encourage them once and there will be no end.
Only the enquiry into the Self can be of use.
Those familiar with logic, Vritti Prabhakara, वृत्ति-प्रभाकर, Vichara Sagara विचार-सागर, or Sutra-Bhashya, सूत्र-भाष्य or similar large works, cannot relish small works like Truth-Revealed dealing only with the Self and that pointedly too, because they have accumulated vasanas वासना (latent past impressions on mind). Only those whose minds are less muddy, or are pure, can relish small and purposeful works.

Silence : ever-speaking voice / सनातन / नित्य-वाणी

Silence is ever-speaking (सनातन / नित्य-वाणी); it is a perennial flow of language; it is interrupted by speaking. These words obstruct that mute language. There is electricity flowing in a wire. With resistance to its passage, it glows as a lamp or revolves as a fan. In the wire it remains as electric energy. Similarly also, silence is the eternal flow of language, obstructed by words.

What one fails to know by conversation extending to several years can be known in a trice in Silence, or in front of Silence - e.g., श्रीदक्षिणामूर्ति Dakshinamurti, and his four disciples.

That is the highest and most effective language.

On the morning of the 1st of September, 1896, Venkataraman boarded the train to Tiruvannamalai. The travel took, only a short time. Alighting from the train, he hastened to the great temple of Arunacalesvara. All the gates stood open — even the doors of the inner shrine. The temple was then empty of all people — even the priests. Venkataraman entered the sanctum sanctorum, a....

Having terrible toothache. The tooth is going through pain in between a lapse of few minutes. When a pain-killer is taken, the pain disappears for a few hours, then re-appears. If during this time I go asleep, no question of pain. If I don't go in sleep and I'm waking, xmyx mind doesn't tell me 'there is no pain'. This 'me' / the working mind that identifies itself with the body-conditions of pain or no-pain keeps changing forms. This working mind is phenomenal and has nominal formal existence where-as the Consciousness where from this emerges that phenomenal and nominal formal mind emerges out and where-into the same merges back stays unaffected. though giving this enabling this phenomenal and nominal formal mind a flux-like existence. If my attention does not sway-away from the Consciousness that is the ground and source of this phenomenal being (mind), and I can with or without effort remember and firmly abide into that Consciousness the pain or no-pain condition is just irrelevant. ....
